Hidden Gems
If you would like to add some variety or try a new twist, check out these hidden gems that can be found right on the curriculum websites:
- Serial Stories (www.readinga-z.com): These stories follow a character/characters through multiple texts and the different series will appeal to different kids. Many students like series since they can get to know the characters over a few stories and it is similar to watching one episode of a show. To find these, log onto Reading A-Z, go to "Leveled Reading", and then on the left click on "Serial Books"
- Graphic Organizers (www.readinga-z.com): You might want to integrate a different graphic organizer for a specific lesson, or maybe you are bringing in outside reading material and want a graphic organizer to go along with it. There is a list of about 50 graphic organizers on Reading A-Z that you can print and apply to any lesson or reading. To find these, log onto Reading A-Z, go to "Leveled Reading", and then on the left click on "Graphic Organizers"
- Write Rights: (www.writinga-z.com): A daily grammar exercise is a great activity for kids to start with while everyone is getting settled. Writing A-Z has weekly grammar exercises for all levels of writing. To find these, log onto Writing A-Z, and on the home page in the middle you will see a tab that says "Write Rights".
- Poetry: (www.readinga-z.com): The "Poetry" tab has a wealth of resources for your students to read and write poetry. From the home screen of Reading A-Z, click on the poetry tab and check it out!

Get more involved with The Literacy Lab
Have you ever wondered where those sign-in sheets go, or how exactly your progress reports make it into the mail boxes of parents? Do you find yourself intrigued by the goings-on at the office when stopping by to print? You may be just the person to volunteer in The Literacy Lab's office!
If you would like to become more involved with the operations of The Literacy Lab, we are currently seeking volunteers to help out during the day. In our conversations, I realize that you all have many skills that could help us further our mission, and I know that many of you are also interested in the non-profit field.
We are currently seeking a few volunteers to assist with organization, paperwork, research, and data management. We are looking for people who can commit at least two day-time hours per week. If you or anyone else you know would be interested, please e-mail Ashley.
